What is solarpunk? A hopeful beginner’s guide

It feels easier to imagine the end of the world than a thriving one. Solarpunk dares to imagine the second.

The October letter

For decades, popular culture has been very good at imagining our collective collapse. It can feel easier to imagine the end of the world than a thriving, sustainable future. Solarpunk asks a different question: what if we dared to imagine a hopeful future instead?

Solar and punk

“Solar” stands for sustainability, renewable energy and a restorative connection to the Earth’s natural cycles. “Punk” is resistance to the status quo: to mindless consumerism, fossil fuel dependency, and the cynical belief that a better world is impossible.

Built from things we already have

Solarpunk doesn’t rely on impossible inventions. It looks like solar panels over canals, ships with modern sails, food grown on city rooftops, and learning again from Indigenous ecological knowledge. It’s about building cities that behave like living ecosystems.

In a culture obsessed with doom, solarpunk is a movement of radical optimism.
