Painting Becoming Autumn, stroke by stroke

An abstract acrylic about the moment summer fades and warm autumn tones creep in, and why I wanted it to keep us moving.

Detail of Becoming Autumn

Becoming Autumn is an abstract acrylic on canvas, painted at that point in the year when there are still traces of green and summer around, but the warm autumn colours are creeping in.

Organic shapes and spirals

I love using flowing shapes and spirals, the kind you find in nature. I build the painting up in layers: a warm orange ground, then dots and petals of red and pink, then thick strokes of blue and white that I push around with the brush until they feel like moving water.

Keeping the energy going

As the colder months arrive, it’s easy to lose momentum and want to cosy up inside. I think we all felt climate change this summer, with the heatwaves and fires across Europe. I wanted this painting to keep that energy flowing forward, towards collective action.
